Balancing your Yoga Practice: Ayurveda and Asana

The principles of Ayurveda can be incorporated in our Yoga practice so that the body, mind and spirit are able to connect at a better level and there will harmony in your life!

Ayurveda believes in one of the most crucial aspects known as doshas and as per Ayurveda, there are three doshas present namely: Vata dosha that is the air element and things such as creativity, impulsiveness, irregularity and movement classify this dosha; while Pitta dosha is the fire element and it defines the assertiveness, passion and competitiveness and the Kapha dosha is regarding the calm, stable, relaxed and earthly.

As per Ayurveda, the overall health and wellbeing of an individual starts dropping when the constitution we were born with, Prakriti, becomes Vikriti; which depicts an imbalance. Typically, Vikriti is an exaggeration of the existing constitution we have; such as the Vata constitution being increasingly airy or anxious when there is an imbalance in the Vata component to an extent in a predominantly Kapha individual.

Ayurveda also promotes us to build the tendency that pushes us towards reinforcing of the imbalance in the prevailing life. If there is a Pitta imbalance in an individual and they might incline more towards demanding and heating practices; and they can think of Bikram Yoga, which is to be done in a heated room or you should do the precise and demanding Ashtanga Vinyasa style. As per the Ayurveda and therapeutic yoga sense, it is better to not be precise and instead end up having a more relaxing practice such as Shitali Pranayama, or the cooling breath technique as it is more efficient.

Sometimes, we are bound by practices that do not suit us and it is not considered to be a great idea.
